Think of previous instances when things were better
Once, a young man approached a revered teacher, who was seated under a tree near a beautiful lake, and asked for the solution for his unhappiness. Once, a young man approached a revered teacher, who was seated under a tree near a beautiful lake, and asked for the solution for his unhappiness. After some minutes of conversation the old master kindly instructed the visitor to put a handful of salt in a glass of water and then to drink a few mouthfuls."How does it taste †the teacher asked. "Awful,†said the apprentice after he had spat out the revolting liquid a few paces away. The teacher chuckled and then asked the young man to take another handful of salt and put it in the lake. The two walked in silence to the nearby lake and when the youngster swirled his handful of salt into the lake, the old man told him,
Now drink from the lake.â€As the water dripped down the young man’s chin, the master asked him again, "How does it taste †"Good!†he replied. "Do you taste the salt †asked the master. "No,†said the young man. The master sat beside the troubled youth, took his hands, and said, "The pain of life is pure salt; no more, no less. The amount of pain in life remains the same, exactly the same. But the level of ‘pain we taste’ depends on the container we put it into. So when you are in pain, the only thing you can do is to enlarge your sense of things. Stop being a glass. Become a lake.â€And you can become a lake where you broaden your outlook; when you stop looking only at yourself and your miseries. Look at life as a whole and the many things without which you would not be what you are today — your friends, family, hobbies and nature around you. When you are confronted with a problem, you see only the problem and bother over it endlessly, which only makes the situation more tragic.
Think of previous instances when things were better. Look at all the blessings that God has filled your life with about which you never give a thought. One technique, which helps a lot is taking a piece of paper and making two columns: problems and blessings. Once this is done, start filling in the respective columns thinking of what all problems and blessings God has given you. Invariably, one will find that the list of blessings is at least thrice as longer than the list of problems. Let this list be a reminder that the good things that have happened to us will always outnumber the problems we face. Also, one should not compare himself/herself negatively with others. You are a unique person and if you have faith, God will provide what you need. When you have pain in your life, put it in front of God, it will surely mitigate. Do not try to take the problems head on and put it in front, as you cannot see beyond it. God is infinite.

Is this convenience worth the asking price of Rs 9
From Targus, an all-purpose connection solution for the footloose USB-30-1 copy.jpg From Targus, an all-purpose connection solution for the footlooseE.M Forster’s famous epigraph or succinct summary of his novel Howard’s End — "Only Connect†— referred to the challenge of connecting people. Today, a tougher, more common challenge is to connect digital devices in a so-called ‘connected world’.In the race to make computers thinner and lighter, makers often reduce the number of ports they offer. What is the use of an ultra-light notebook or tablet if you can’t connect an external display or project a movie or a presentation, or if you can’t tap into a broadband connection using an ethernet connection (always faster and more reliable than WiFi) Yet the average portable computer tends to flaunt its super light tag by doing away with the good old VGA port or the gigabit ethernet connection. The Targus USB3.0 Travel Dock DOCK 110 comes as the answer to the prayers of hassled mobile professionals (and a lot of lay users). It offers a full slate of ports: VGA, Ethernet, the new USB 3.0 standard port, a micro USB if you want to charge a device — and the contemporary HDMI port for carrying HD video.
A USB 3.0 cable
instant heating tap Manufacturers is integrated into the dock and sits snuggly inside till you pull it out. It weighs just 237 grams and will effectively replace a few connector cables, many times heavier. It may not be able to replace all your cables, but it will sharply reduce the chances of you discovering that you can’t get hotel internet or make a critical presentation because there is a cable mismatch.
Is this convenience worth the asking price of Rs 9,999 Your personal and professional lifestyle will decide for you. We do wish, however, they had gone one step further and added one port of the reversible USB Type C variety. That would have made the Targus Dock perfect.

wholesale instant heating water faucet JLR currently holds a 9 per cent share in the market and is looking at increasing it further by penetrating into tier 2 and tier 3 cities by expanding their sales and service network. With the sole intention of drawing more sales in India, Tata Motors-owned Jaguar Land Rover is looking at focusing on the entry level luxury car market. JLR currently holds a 9 per cent share in the market and is looking at increasing it further by penetrating into tier 2 and tier 3 cities by expanding their sales and service network.Speaking on the same, Rohit Suri, president Land Rover India said, "We have managed to acquire 9 per cent market share in the premium segment despite not having a product in the lower end segments like hatchbacks. We have been able to attract customers at the higher end given the strong brand we are.â€Backing on the strong demands of the Discovery Sport and Jaguar XE JLR registered a strong growth of 45 per cent in the January – March quarter this year. To consolidate its position in the market JLR has to bring in affordable luxury cars just like its German rivals -- Audi, Mercedes, and BMW. With no cars in this segment, it’s losing a major chunk of volumes to its rivals. "If it makes sense we will look at lower segments in the luxury car market. In fact, with the launch of Jaguar XE we have tried to enter the lower segments compared to where we were. We have started to tap the customers in the lower end,†he added. The fourth largest luxury carmaker in India is now looking forward to increase its dealership count from the present 23 to 26 alongside expansion in tier 2 and tier 3 cities like Nagpur and Raipur. It’s also planning to train the executives at JLR outlets for a better customer service experience. It recently launched a third variant of the XE – the Prestige, which sits between the top of the line XE Pure and the base XE Portfolio. The company is hoping that the Prestige version will attract more volumes as it’s loaded with features and priced well. JLR currently assembles the XE, XF, XJ, Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque in the country.Source: CarDekho.com

The former Indian captain along with Ajay Sharma
Just at the turn of the century, in the year 2000 to be precise, cricket was dealt a body blow from which it is yet to recover. Players of repute who were hero-worshipped in their country were caught on the wrong foot. Just at the turn of the century, in the year 2000 to be precise, cricket was dealt a body blow from which it is yet to recover. Players of repute who were hero-worshipped in their country were caught on the wrong foot.
Some of the names that came out left the fans shell-shocked and even those who didn’t follow the sport closely were stunned by the turn of events. Sadly for cricket, those blows have been repeated every few years with clockwork regularity — there has been enough corruption and fixing in the world of cricket to demand a book on the subject. Shantanu Guha Ray’s book, Fixed!
Cash and Corruption in Cricket, chronicles all the major incidents that have dented the image of the sport and those involved with it. For those who don’t follow the sport closely, the book will enlighten in great detail about the mess that cricket is in. For those who are fond of cricket, it still offers insights and in-depth revelations about how the rot has spread. It is not a straight-forward affair; there are multiple layers to it and the powers-that-be are doing precious little to clean up the game. If anything, they are going that extra yard to ensure that status quo is maintained and corruption continues.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India’s handling of the whole Gurunath Meiyappan saga — featuring the son-in-law of the then BCCI president N. Srinivasan — proves how serious the cricket body is about coming clean.Ray, who specialises in investigative journalism, shines a bright light on everything that is murky in the world of cricket. The stakes are so high that Mr Srinivasan apparently hired a London-based detective agency to keep a tab on and tap the phones of those involved in probing the 2013 Indian Premier League scandal, including BCCI officials. The bill for this was a cool `14 crore.
The author has interviewed several people quoted in the book, including those who form the principal cast of all that happens behind the scenes as far as betting and fixing are concerned. While the book updates your knowledge about various scandals, it also leaves you depressed about what the game has become: "I am almost convinced that the stable will never be clean. For too many have their fingers in the pie,†Ray says in the concluding line of the introduction. By the time you have finished the book, you couldn’t agree more.In the first chapter, Fixed! highlights the inside world of bookies, describing in detail that fateful day in May 2013 when bookies were arrested in Delhi soon after S. Sreesanth and two other players of the now banned Rajasthan Royals were taken into police custody.
While the arrests were made in the capital, the repercussions were felt in every nook and corner of the country and beyond — Pakistan, Dubai, Malaysia and even Singapore were involved in the hawala transactions. The government on its part has also done precious little to bring in legislation to effectively tackle the menace of match-fixing.In England, for instance, Pakistani pacer Mohammad Amir was arrested in a spot-fixing scandal in 2010, convicted in 2011 and is already out after serving his five-year sentence. Meanwhile in India, in the match fixing scandal of 2000, the chargesheets were filed 13 years later in 2013, and the court hearings still haven’t reached anywhere. To say that there are grey areas as far as the laws on betting are concerned is an understatement, as the book points out. The Public Gambling Act dates back to 1867 and it was only in 1996 that courts in Tamil Nadu declared gambling on horse racing as legal because it was a game of "skillâ€. Ray makes the point that if horse racing and Rummy are "games of skillâ€, why not cricket The chapters in the book delve into the minutiae of unfortunate and suspicious incidents linked to cricket over the years like the deaths of Bob Woolmer and Hansie Cronje.
The India-born Woolmer was Pakistan’s coach during the 2007 World Cup, when he was found dead in his hotel room under mysterious circumstances after his team lost to the West Indies and then, inexplicably, to the minnows, Ireland. In what appears to be straight out of a thriller, the investigation took a different turn although the initial evidence suggested foul play. To this day, no one knows how Woolmer died.Ray also focuses on the spot-fixing incident in England mentioned earlier and relatively lesser-known episodes like the fixing in the Bangladesh Premier League, which resulted in a ban on Mohammed Ashraful, the former Bangladesh captain who was fondly known as "Dhaka Tendulkar†after he made a debut with a bang at the age of 17.
The author has interviewed Ashraful who gives us an insight into how cricketers get lured into the murky world of crime, eventually heading to a point of no return. The whole IPL saga, including spot-fixing, Modi-gate, and
China instant heating electric tap Suppliers the Shashi Tharoor controversy, gets in-depth coverage. There’s also a chapter dedicated to Jagmohan Dalmiya who, as president of the BCCI in his last tenure, was mentally so incoherent that he didn’t know which IPL team Sachin Tendulkar was mentoring. The Justice R.M Lodha committee rightly questioned the BCCI as to how it was functioning with a president who was so ill.
While Ray doesn’t hesitate to mention names in most cases, there is the odd reference where you have to read between the lines (and hope that you are reading correctly) — like the "finest cricketer of the 1980s and 1990s who was all set to become the skipper of the Indian team who when called for questioning would sit with his legs on the table and demand chicken sandwiches and Darjeeling teaâ€.
The notable omission in the book is the Mohammad Azharuddin chronicle. The former Indian captain along with Ajay Sharma, Ajay Jadeja and Manoj Prabhakar, was banned by the BCCI in 2000. That episode doesn’t find a mention. It was the turning point in Indian cricket that lost many fans, never mind if new ones have replaced them since. The epilogue of the book is even more damning where gloomier details emerge from the author’s inquiry. Cops from the Mumbai Police department also have their fingers in the pie. Shockingly, one of them allegedly made `250 crore which was shared with his senior officers. The Justice Mukul Mudgal and Justice R.M. Lodha committees appointed by the Supreme Court have offered a glimmer of hope, but how effective will the house cleaning be Your guess is as good as mine.
Only time will tell if the committees go the way of all other committees, but this well-written book serves as a reminder that cricket is no longer a gentleman’s game.Sachin Chatte is a cricket commentator for All-India Radio, film critic for Goa’s Navhind Times, radio jockey for FM Rainbow and an IT consultant based in Goa

Olympics, the excitement has been growing globally on what to expect from Rio —
where to eat, what to drink and what to do. Rio de Janerio, as chefs and foodies
know it, is a melting pot of different cuisines — European, African, Portuguese,
Latin American and much more. Eat your way to churrascos (barbequed beef),
coxinhas (chicken croquettes) or sip on some fine Brazilian coffee. And in case
you’re one among the many of us, who is going to be watching the Olympics right
from your TV sets at home — DC has brought you some easy-to-make Brazilian
recipes that will transport you to this exotic land. Here’s our simplified guide
to the best of Rio de Janerio cuisine So, What makes Brazilian coffee different
from the whole world "Brazil is the largest producer of coffee in the world and
due to the amount of land that the country has dedicated to coffee alone, the
production of coffee happens on an extremely large scale. Unlike in India, where
coffee is grown in the shade, the coffee in Brazil grows in large open lands —
where the coffee plants are grown to the extent of huge trees. Hence many
countries use Brazilian coffee as the base to the coffee they sell. It is
usually not very intense in flavour as the coffee we grow in India but
definitely the beans have a heavier body, and slightly peanutty quality.
The
cafes in Brazil usually have much richer tasting coffee as against what they
export.†(Sanjoy Gupta, coffee connoisseur and coffee maker at Estate Craft,

like "Cuisine in Rio has influences from European, African, Latin American,
Portuguese cultures. It is also evolving constantly. Nearly every home can be
seen using rice, beans, chili sauce, Brazilian arrow root (tapioca) and lots of
churrasco meat cuts — which is a thin cut of beef, unlike a filet, and is
usually barbecued. Cafes can be seen selling the world famous Brazilian coffee,
and cheese buns. The use of many of these ingredients comes from the history —
like tapioca — which was introduced at a time when Brazil had no potatoes.
Today, it’s a significant part of their culture.†(Chef Abhiram Gona, Executive

draft resolution to be submitted to the UN Security Council takes "explicit†aim
at the Islamic State (ISIS) group and its lucrative trade in oil, French finance
minister Michel Sapin said in an interview Wednesday.
Sapin said the resolution,
to be debated Thursday, would send a "very strong political message: the fight
against the financing of terrorism is one of the priorities of the United
Nations’ members and every state must take the necessary measures.â€And ahead of
Thursday’s meeting with of all 15 finance ministers of Security Council member
states — the first of its kind — Sapin warned that countries that fail to turn
off the tap on jihadists’ funding could potentially face sanctions.France
requested the meeting following the terror attacks in Paris last month that left
130 people dead and were claimed by the ISIS.
Based on an earlier resolution
targeting Al Qaeda, the new text "will be explicitly extended to Daeshâ€, Mr
Sapin said.He added that it will "in particular aim for the freezing of assets
that in one way or another stem from oil smugglingâ€."It will also demand that
states exercise special vigilance with regard to the smuggling of works of art
that could feed big movements like Daesh,†the minister said.
Meanwhile, the ISIS
is looking at potentially vulnerable oil assets in Libya and elsewhere outside
its Syria stronghold, where the militant group controls about roughly 80 per
cent of the oil and gas fields, a senior US official said on Tuesday. The
official on condition of anonymity said the US was carefully examining who
controlled oil fields, pipelines, trucking routes and other infrastructure.

If you disable the continuous heart rate tracking
Xiaomi brings a lot of new features and an attractive design without altering
the price of its budget fitness tracker. Xiaomi is making strides in providing
high-quality technology for extremely affordable prices and the Mi Band 3 is a
living testament to that. Rating: The Mi Band has been an important Xiaomi
product for the Indian market in the recent history. It has single-handedly
added a considerable boost to the wearables market without making consumers’
pocket bleed money. Last year’s Mi Band 2 made for a great option for those who
wanted to enjoy some of the smart wearable&
wholesale instant heating
tap39;s features without paying too much money. Xiaomi even went on to offer
a cheaper HRX edition that omitted the heart rate tracker and brought down the
price even lower.
However, there’s a replacement now for the 2-year-old tracker
— the 3rd generation Mi Band.Christened as Mi Band 3 (a sequel obviously!), the
new model brings a lot of new features and yet asks the same amount of money
that its predecessor demanded — just Rs 1,999. It now offers a bigger
touchscreen display, a larger battery and more parameters to track. On paper, it
appears to be a step in the right direction. Design, BuildXiaomi is known for
bringing quality products at extremely affordable prices to the masses. The Mi
Band 2 wowed everybody back in 2016 for offering a display and a heart rate
sensor, glued together in a package that was too good to resist. The Mi Band 3,
in theory, offers the same, but in an upgraded package in every area. For
starters, the tracker is a drastic upgrade from the older model. Instead of a
flat display, the Mi Band 3 tracker gets a more curved form factor with the new
edge display.
The entire display is curved, which not only makes it look
appealing, but also makes it easier to swipe on the screen. There’s a button
similar to the older bands, but now it’s part of the glass panel and has a
recessed dimple in order to let users know its location. The curved glass panel
does raise some queries about its durability, considering the tracker will
experience several bumps into hard substances and the exposed glass edges could
lead to the panel prone to cracks.Nonetheless, Xiaomi claims that the tracker is
water resistant up to 50m in depth, which means it can easily withstand
torrential downpours or hand washes without bothering.
The actual display is
still smaller than the body, but the dark glass outer panel makes it look almost
bezel-less.Of course, with every new fitness tracker comes the question of
comfort and the Mi Band 3 impresses highly in this regard. The new silicone
strap is now softer than before and feels friendlier to the skin. With a total
weight of just 20g, the Mi Band 3 feels like nothing in comparison to the bunch
of other affordable fitness bands out there. You can easily wear it all day and
even forget that it's on your wrist. The strap's unique design lets its adjust
to any kind of wrist shape/size round or flat, which eventually means you are
seldom adjusting it for grip.
And since users of Mi Band 2 had a gripe about the
tracker falling out of the strap, Xiaomi has gone in for a new strap design (the
holder slot) that makes it almost impossible to pop the band out. It’s held so
firmly that it often becomes tricky to get the tracker out for charging. Yes,
you still have a dongle with POGO pins for charging the tracker and it needs to
be popped out of the strap.Features, PerformanceFor this year’s model, Xiaomi is
promising a host of additional features compared to the older model. The biggest
noticeable change is the new touchscreen display that’s bigger at 0.78-inches.
The panel is still a monochromatic OLED, which is why you only see all the
information in white. However, the resolution is now sharper and a tad brighter
than before, but it still isn’t visible very clearly under direct sunlight.
Since it can now be operated via touch input, you can swipe your way through the
list — swipe up to go through all the categories and swipe left/right to view
options in each one of them. Xiaomi has taken advantage of the bigger display
and now uses it to display more information than its predecessor. The button
below it acts as a sort of back button for whichever screen you are in and long
pressing it will hold certain activities related to the highlighted option on
the display. You can view weather forecasts up to three days in advance, with
small intuitive icons. Most importantly, you can now read your content from
WhatsApp, Instagram, Twitter and Facebook notifications. This is a highly useful
addition especially for commuters when one needs to have a quick glance at the
notification without taking out the phone. The Mi Band 3 will keep on
accumulating up to five notifications, which can be cleared once you tap and
hold the touch button for 3 seconds. Do note that the notifications don’t
disappear on their own even if you have dealt with them on your phone, so you
will need to clear them out manually.
Next up is the step tracker option, which
shows the number of steps, the number of calories burnt since the start of the
day and the total distance covered. The step tracking is noticeably improved
from the predecessor and fitness freaks can surely rely on it. Weirdly, the
battery meter also sits in this section. The heart rate monitoring needs to be
activated by holding the button for 3 seconds, post which it starts tracking the
heartbeat and shows the information within seconds. Sadly, Xiaomi still hasn’t
gone for live continuous heart rate tracking, which is something the competition
offers a standard. However, you can enable an all-day tracking through the Mi
Fit app, which will let the band read your heart rate at user-selectable
frequent intervals — a duration of at least 1 minute to 30 minutes. Do note that
it depreciates the battery faster. There’s a new exercise mode, which once
initiated, starts recording various parameters of the body using all the onboard
sensors to let you know your gains in the form of calories burnt and your heart
rate. In exercise mode, the tracker keeps on tracking the body stats live and
one needs to manually stop it.
For those who like to give their bodies a tough
workout, this may be the most cost-effective way to monitor your body
parameters.Lastly, a ‘More’ section houses a highly useful stopwatch feature, a
silent mode to turn off the vibration feedback and a ‘Find My Device’ option to
locate your phone if it's within the Bluetooth range by playing the ringtone.
You also get a ‘Screen’ option that lets you choose between three watch faces
that display a host of information in three different styles. You can swipe to
choose your desired watch face and tap on it to select it. A highly useful
feature is the ‘Swipe to Unlock,’ which can be enabled from the Mi Fit app and
prevent the Band 3 from responding to accidental touches.Since we have mentioned
the Mi Fit app a lot, existing Mi Band users will be pretty familiar with the
app. In fact, nothing much has changed since we last reviewed the Mi Band-HRX
edition. The app is instrumental in setting up the tracker and delivering
firmware updates.
It collects all the data from the tracker and it applies
algorithms on them to show various statistics such as sleep data, burnt
calories, weight monitoring and heart rate variation. If you don’t fancy the
presentation, you can integrate your band with Google Fit for a more detailed
take. With the app, you can tweak various settings of the Mi Band 3. You can
choose which apps can display notifications or set multiple alarms on the band.
Fancy which ringtone to play when you request the ‘Find My Device’ feature? You
can choose it from here. Don’t like the heart rate sensor always tracking your
beats? You can turn it off.Fiddle around and you can customise a lot from here.
However, there’s one drawback here — you can’t pair two Xiaomi wearables to a
single Mi account.
Therefore, if you have been using an older version of Mi Band
registered to your Mi account, you will have to deregister it from the account
in order to pair and use the new model. The same process also # stands true if
you want to re-use the older or any other wearable from Xiaomi.BatteryThe Mi
Band 2 was kept alive by a 70mAh battery and that could easily last 20 days when
used with all the features activated. With the Mi Band 3, Xiaomi had to keep in
mind the bigger power-sipping touchscreen display and live tracking in the
exercise mode. Therefore, they have plonked in a bigger 110mAh battery, which
promises stamina of up to 20 days. With the continuous heart rate tracking and
constant connection to a smartphone with all the notifications enabled, the Mi
Band 3 lasted us for around 11-12 days.
If you disable the continuous heart rate
tracking, you can stretch it close to promised 20-days-mark. In both cases, you
can simple charge, strap it on your wrist and forget it as it will last enough
for you not to worry about filling it up every 2-3 days. Do note that it takes
around two hours to refill the band once the stamina depletes
completely.ConclusionXiaomi is making strides in providing high-quality
technology for extremely affordable prices and the Mi Band 3 is a living
testament to that. The new model offers a substantial upgrade over the previous
model, making it an all-day assistant on your wrist keeping a tab on your health
and helping you go through the day with quasi-smartwatch functions. Surely,
around the Rs 1,999 mark, there are a lot of other fitness trackers that offer
more features such as blood-oxygen and blood pressure tracking, and a colour
display.
However, when you compare all of them to the Mi Band 3, you could be
impressed for the all-round refinement that Xiaomi has baked into the Mi Band 3,
thereby begging a belief as to whether Xiaomi is losing some money on every
single one they sell. Therefore, if you are looking for an efficient fitness
tracker or a watered-down smartwatch-like band without losing cash like sweat,
the Mi Band 3 is our top pick for this year’s best budget fitness
tracker.(source)

running dry this summer because of scant rainfall in 2018. (Representional
Image) In his 2015 sci-fi thriller, The Water Knife, set in Phoenix, Arizona,
sometime in the near, dystopian future, novelist Paolo Bacigalupi talks about
places that are catastrophically water-starved, where suburbs have morphed into
ghost towns and where people are fleeing drought.
A riveting character in the
book called Angel is a "water knifeâ€, tasked to infiltrate and sabotage the
water supplies of competing states.I read excerpts of the book. It is racy,
graphic, and terrifying, and not in the realm of the implausible anymore. We are
living in water-stressed times; there are water-haves and a rising tide of water
have-nots. A friend who lives in Gurgaon recently tweeted that in upscale
condominiums in his city, there is free, unmetered, unlimited water for
residents and one can actually leave a tap running and go off for a week with no
charge and minimal consequences.Meanwhile, the residents of Chennai, India’s
sixth largest city, are living through horrific times, though it rained a little
earlier this week. Chennai has basically almost run out of water.
The city is
almost entirely dependent on the northeast monsoon, which starts in October.
Last year, it received very little rainfall.Even thousands of kilometres away
from Chennai, it is hard to insulate oneself against its troubles. All the four
reservoirs that supply Chennai its water are running dry this summer because of
scant rainfall in 2018. Chennai’s water crisis is front-page news; friends’
Facebook posts describe in grim detail what is it is like to go without enough
water day after day. There are images and video clips of long queues of people
around water tankers in searing heat; there have been reports of scuffles over
water. Many of Chennai’s hotels are rationing water for guests, and some private
companies have reportedly asked their staff to work from home. This week, the
state government has announced that a train will bring water to Chennai from
Jolarpettai in Vellore district, more than 200 km, away at a huge cost. The
Opposition DMK leadership is against the idea. In short, more troubles lie
ahead.Chennai makes the headlines because it is a metropolitan city. But it is
by no means the only place suffering acute water stress. Nearly half the country
is grappling with drought-like conditions, and this has been particularly bad
this year in western and southern India because of the below-average
rainfall. The question that interests me most about Chennai is how did it get to
this sorry state? Tamil Nadu was perhaps the first state in India to make
rainwater harvesting (RWH) mandatory for all buildings in 2003. Chennai has more
than eight lakh RWH structures. So why are so many people in that city facing
such an acute water shortage? There hangs a tale which explains just about every
mess that you see in urban India. A building with a rainwater harvesting system
on paper does not mean it actually works. A bit like the existence of a toilet
does not mean it is used.It will not work if it is not maintained properly.
Friends in Chennai tell me there is huge apathy among a lot of people towards
maintaining these structures. The water crisis had never been this acute. Many
of the rainwater harvesting structures in Chennai are also inefficient. If
Chennai and so many other cities are facing a water crisis today, one big reason
is that neither policymakers nor many people living in these places truly
realise the horrors of running out of water. If it starts raining anytime soon,
people will forget their recent sufferings. That’s why the inefficiencies in the
water sector remain, and rainwater storage and reuse and treatment of greywater
are not given the importance that they deserve. Here is one scandalous statistic
about water losses. Lack of proper maintenance of infrastructure causes losses
of almost 40 per cent of piped water in urban India.Chennai is currently in the
news, but the big picture regarding water in India is grim. The Niti Aayog, the
government’s think tank, acknowledges that nearly 600 million people in the
country face high-to extreme water stress. There is a deepening national
groundwater crisis, with 54 per cent of wells declining in level due to
unsustainable withdrawals for irrigation. The Narendra Modi government’s new Jal
Shakti (water) ministry has announced a grand plan to provide piped water
connections to every household in India by 2024.But the key question remains —
what will happen if there is no water to give? What will it take to realise that
time is running out and we have to also wake up to simple ideas about conserving
water. India captures only eight per cent of its annual rainfall. This is among
the lowest in the world. Our ancestors used to capture far more. But those
traditional methods have been neglected to the point where most are in ruins. We
also don’t use our wastewater well. There is much talk about security. It is time
to realise that water is a security issue. Millions of Indians are not
water-secure. Fights are breaking out over water. In Madhya Pradesh, the state
government has reportedly asked the police in all its 52 districts to guard
water sources. An existential threat hovers over many prosperous pockets of
India. A drought is a huge part of the problem. The situation is getting
steadily worse with unregulated extraction of groundwater, which is depleting
underground aquifers. Take Bengaluru. Whoever has money drills a borewell to tap
groundwater in the newer suburban areas where tech companies are clustered in
the city.A few years ago, I remember meeting a young hip technocrat who told me
that "I fear the day when I will have soap all over my face and there is not a
drop of water coming out of the tapâ€.But I also saw a fascinating initiative
called the Participatory Aquifer Mapping Project, which sought to involve
Bengaluru’s residents in sharing information about borewells in their
communities so that the city’s policymakers could learn what was happening
underground and begin to craft a suitable response.Today, in this country,
demand for water vastly outstrips supply; the situation can deteriorate sharply
unless we realise that this is an emergency and we must treat water as a
precious resource and everyone must work towards conserving it.The future could
well resemble dystopian fiction.

The availability of ready information affects our motivation
Please don’t brand the Internet as though it’s just a hellish peddler of
villainy."A relative lack of research is noticed with the advent of search
engines. As of now, sitting in the office, we can easily be alerted if an
intruder is in the house, thanks to IoT.
He is no longer a regular person,
thinking, deciding and acting normally. A stage came when the youth feared that
his life would collapse without Wikipedia and began to carry it on his gadget
even to the toilet. In fact, my own professional life and academic achievements
would not have come to light but for the Webâ€.
Internet is certainly a boon.
They are reading, not books perhaps, but stuff on the phone,†says author Meena
Kandasamy, adding, "On the other
China electric

narrowing. While detailing a disturbing chronological account of almost three
decades of Internet-inspired bomb-making, Wikipedia has a para on British
student Isa Ibrahim, sentenced to 10 years in jail in July 2008 for planning to
bomb a mall with a suicide vest explosive made with instructions found online.
Sleep gets disturbed. People now think less on their feet and rely more on
search engines,†says Dr Kishore.
Communication gets derailed,†says Dr Sharma,
who recently treated a 24-year-old patient from West Bengal brought to him with
decreased communication with the family and interpersonal maladjustments because
of intense addiction to Wikipedia. It gets worse in time as the person withdraws
further into his virtual word, even blaming the family saying that they are
excessively critical of him,†says Dr Manoj Kumar Sharma, Additional Professor,
Department of Clinical Psychology, National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro
Sciences (NIMHANS), Bengaluru. Some see a silver lining in this scary
picture.
The person sinks deeper and deeper into his virtual world. "As research
on AI continues to grow, a more intelligent and smart Internet will evolve, the
better designed and tailor-made the apps would become, and life would become
easier. But we no longer need to remember our friends’phone numbers, know how to
multiply two numbers, or observe and think whether plants are living beings like
us or not, because all answers are available on the WWW. I think, therefore I
am. He is worried that children, ‘facilitated’ now by social networking sites
and cell phone texting, have forgotten the formats of writing prevalent in prior
generations.Doctors have been speaking about ‘Digital Dementia’ since the early
1990s.
The Web has revolutionised teaching and learning, it has brought
knowledge at the ‘finger-tap’ to the seeker in the remotest corner of the globe.
John’s Public Schools, Chennai, says technology has given the teacher tools to
boost the student’s learning capabilities but then, he cautions, it is becoming
difficult to keep children from drowning in the virtual world and to help them
develop independent/individual cognitive skills, instead. "Not all the effects
are negative.â€
In this, they have been successful beyond their dreams, and Google
has become the world’s most valuable company.Another celebrated teacher has a
different take on this.(The writer is Executive Editor of Deccan Chronicle).
Availability of readymade knowledge affects our thinking and limits our
problem-solving skills. That’s mild reading on Wikipedia actually, considering
that on the same page you also have the 2004 Madrid train bombers, who killed
191 people and wounded 1,800 with explosives made using instruction on the Web.
But it takes away the charm of old-fashioned research — having to read
truckloads of stuff in order to stumble upon what you are looking for.
Developing creative skills in the student becomes tough for a teacher in this
environment."Education no longer focuses on producing a creative society, but
rather on one that feeds voraciously on ready knowledge. Dr R. Will this lead to
smarter apps and people who are unwilling to think?†wonders Ilanthendral. His
solitary lifestyle has space only for himself and his mobile phone as he locks
himself up in his room.
The man had first accessed Wikipedia for normal
information but in course of time, turned to it for everything, including
spiritual issues. Earlier, it would take months of running around libraries and
poring through heaps of books. It has demolished economic barriers as even a
poor rural student can access high-class knowledge sourced from experts at low
or no costâ€, says Dr Vasantha Kandasamy, a professor at the Vellore Institute of
Technology (VIT), whose 126 books on higher mathematics, all highly-rated, are
on the Web for global students and researchers. Heavy users are likely to
develop only the left side of the brain, leaving the right side untapped and
underdeveloped.â€Meena says, "The thing with Google is also that you get
precisely the very information that you want — which is cool and brilliant and
easy and lovely.
The availability of ready information affects our motivation to
think and limits our problem-solving skills. Things have gotten worse with the
galloping spread of smart phones and gaming devices. While the internet has made
obtaining answers easier, it has also made people app-dependent.She says, "If I
need some information for my research, I am able to get it on the Net in a
minute. But as one begins to fathom what all could be sourced from cyberspace,
it becomes as awesome as trying to cap infinity.â€When the teacher at school and
the parent at home ignore the problem, the child develops excessive reliance on
gadgets, the Internet and Google. For instance, people actually spend a lot more
time reading — facebook posts, news, twitter, whatever — than they would
otherwise.
In the future, many more interesting things will be possiblewith a
tap on the phone,†she says.Isn’t all this technology making us lazy? "No one
these days tries to add a few numbers mentally; they reach out for the
calculator app on the phone. This is where schools play a pivotal role, in
training students to write composition to develop independent writing and
note-making skills, which in turn helps in generating ideas,†Dr Kishore says,
adding, however, that "the most disturbing element is our dependence on this
virtual world and distancing ourselves from core human values like empathy and
concern.
He would spend day and night on Wikipedia, even skipping his eating and
washing routines. Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin’s original mission
was to örganise the world’s information and make it universally accessible and
useful. The quiz loss complaint is actually a very trivial affair, a fun thing
really, as it was quite a harmless application of the World Wide Web for a
solution.â€Her sister Dr Ilanthendral, who teaches Information Technology
students at the VIT, says the Internet has undergone a paradigm shift with the
advent of Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, social media and IoT.
The right
side being linked to concentration, its neglect affects attention and memory
span, which could lead to early dementia. You have everything available on the
Net, from instructions on grooming a cat to making a bomb; not to mention
wonderfully useful information for all sections of people, from schoolchildren
to university scholars, homemakers and holidaymakers, professionals and
pensioners, farmers and weathermen.
A generation down the line, will man still
be the ‘thinking animal’?On a wet cosy evening in a colonial club in the hills,
holidaying families from Chennai lodged a ‘strong protest’ with the management
that they lost a quiz competition as a team tucked away in a corner cheated in
getting their answers from Google on their phone. We no longer want
newspaper-style engagement, we want arguments in twitter-friendly formats. In
the case of older addicts, more serious issues arise that threaten social life
and relationships — such as obsessive enga-gement in Internet porn, or even
Facebook and other social media. But what is the impact it is having on its
users, which is practically all of us? Cogito, ergo sum, said Rene Descartes.

I have always done politics of principles
The government machinery was not misused. Have you set a target for yourself or
would like to predict the number of seats? The BJP’s target of 180 seats includes
Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Mizoram, but they won’t
get that much seats collectively. I am very confident no matter what spin they
put on this they can’t stop the Congress from coming to power. What is your
interpretation of the high court judgment on the Gaurav Yatra?
The high court has
done the right thing by not allowing Vasundharaji to claim political dividends
with taxpayers’ money. Vasundharaji issued written orders to officials for
arrangements even after the high court issued notices. The BJP will have to pay
for the ills; the false promises they made. It is our endeavour to give tickets
to fresh, young, clean and educated people and those who have toiled hard in
adverse conditions in the last four years. But I am not looking at her negatives
only to win this election. We wouldn’t have won 20 out of 22 Assembly seats in
byelections in four years but for a sustained campaign.
It was okay for them to
go as Opposition and campaign against the state government in Karnataka to try
and get anti-incumbency vote, but here they have to pay for the follies of
Vasundharaji. Opponents should be answered in a political lingo but by calling
names you are only showing what stuff you are made of.But the Congress also
undertook a Sandesh Yatra when Ashok Gehlot was chief minister in 2013?Yes he
did, but not a single rupee of government funds was spent on it. It is a totally
desperate initiative to pat her back using taxpayers’ money. The best person
will get the ticket based on feedback and consultation. People are giving
overwhelming support; lakhs of them are coming at their own expense. So our good
things could not be communicated but the negative aspects of Vasundharaji are
very well communicated. One can give speeches and jumlas, but the economy is
hurt, job loss and farmers distress are rampant.Vasundharaji has called you a
novice in politics?
How do you react to that?I do not want to make any personal
comments, as she is much older than me.What about ticket distribution? Is it not
going to be a headache to pacify so many aspirants?I am glad and heartened that
so many people want to contest because they feel that the Congress is going to
win. The BJP targeted 150 in Gujarat but got stuck at 99. They can try and make
it personality-based and event-based, but you can’t erase the five years of
agony that people have suffered. But the Congress has a history of faltering at
the last moment. The point is that we must criticise in a responsible way; we
must demonstrate keeping the civility in mind and pressure the government
without creating problems for the common man.Senior Congress leaders have blamed
inability to ineffective publicity of the UPA government’s achievements for the
2014 debacle.
Vasundharaji was forced to withdraw the "gag order†and power
tariff hike. It was apolitical, which we did not try to camouflage and spent
government money on it. On the other hand, we are doing "Sankalp Yatraâ€.We are a
party that believes in law and order. But the general perception is that the
Congress has been unable to evoke and tap the public anger on inflation, rising
fuel prices, job loss and agrarian distress, etc. Rajasthan ke log jaante hain
isko. Bina paise diye kaam nahi hota.
We must maintain a level of debate and
dignity of discourse as people are watching us. She said the same thing about me
in the byelection in Ajmer and got a befitting reply from the people. People
vote on ideology, agenda, programmes and policies and that is exactly what is
going to happen in these three states. It is not right to say we are not
effective. Despite only 44 MPs, we failed Modiji’s attempt to dilute the Land
Acquisition Act eight times. In an interview to Sanjay Bohra, Mr Pilot says the
BJP can deploy any trick but won’t be able to erase five years of agony that the
people have suffered. I am also looking at the positive aspects.. We have
clearly said one need not run around and lobby to leaders. This is a healthy
sign for the party. They cannot get away for all the misgovernance, corruption
and malpractices she has overseen. They can deploy any trick but will not be
able to get away from the responsibility of running the state and the damage she
has done. Today Congress workers feel connected and motivated at the grassroots
level. I do not want to give a target. And even now the young people of
Rajasthan will pay back with interest for making personal comments. The BJP has
set a target of 180 seats. They are angry, upset and disappointed for betraying
their mandate. Daily eight to 10 rapes take place despite there being a woman
CM.
We must have reached the people multiple times covering every Assembly
segment at least three times through Kisan Nyay Yatra, Mera Booth Mera Gaurav
and now Sankalp Yatra. Sachin Pilot
wholesale electric tap
Former Union minister and PCC chief Sachin Pilot infused life into a comatose
party that suffered the worst-ever defeat in its electoral history five years
ago. Chandrashekar Rao said something about Rahulji which was unbecoming of a
man occupying a CM’s post. Whatever protests we did, we never took a route to
create anarchy in the state. Will you be able to sustain the momentum after
getting off to an early start?People don’t get impressed by last-minute
campaigning anymore. This is a blatant misuse of public trust and money. We are
taking a resolve that farmers will not commit suicide, youngsters will actually
get jobs and the resolve that this corrupt and autocratic government has to be
thrown out of Rajasthan. So the high court very rightly delineated the two.
People are very smart these days whether we have been able to tap public anger
or not you will know when voting will take place. Technology, mobile and social
media, it is now self-pervasive. Times change and things evolve.
What will be
your chances if the BJP once again makes it a personal contest between Narendra
Modi and Rahul Gandhi?People want issue-based politics. She is forcing the
administration and police to ferry people at taxpayers’ expense to listen to her
but the people have disregarded her. So we have kept the government on its toes
from 2014 onwards. Excerpts from the interview:How do you compare your Sankalp
Yatra with chief minister Vasundhara Raje’s Rajasthan Gaurav Yatra?"Gauravâ€
means pride, but there is no "gaurav†in her yatra. Gujarat, Karnataka and in
Rajasthan too Mr Gehlot cautioned about 1993, when the party belied
expectations? We can always go back and look at 10, 15 and 20 years, but we have
to look ahead. It was a slap in the face of the BJP government. A sustained
effort over the years really develops the goodwill of the party in the hearts
and minds of the people. That will be paid back. Doesn’t that problem still
persist? Who is to be blamed for poor leadership, communication skills or weak
organisation? The world has changed. And we said that we will give good quality
education and good jobs to everybody or easy credit on easy terms to youngsters
and third is monthly allowance of up to Rs 3,500 to deserving families.
I have
always done politics of principles. She should not only deposit the money back
into the government coffers whatever has been spent so far, but she must also
apologise for this open loot. Crores have been spent in the garb of "Gaurav
Yatraâ€.Pilot says the BJP can deploy any trick but won’t be able to erase five
years of agony that the people have suffered. I do not take people’s mandate for
granted but I know that the last four years of our hard work will see us get a
majority that we perhaps haven’t got thus far. Telangana chief minister K. If
petrol is selling for `80 per litre, it needs no communication; 150 farmers
committed suicide in Rajasthan and the whole world knows it. Vasundharaji has
done the same thing. We in the Congress are evolving a blueprint for the future
in various sectors — investment, education, job creation, sanitation and
healthcare

You can send one of hundreds of virtual stickers
Apple's Messages app has a variation on this.Personal assistant When you're
chatting with someone, you're often making plans. Apple offers something
similar on its smartwatch, but not phones or tablets. Following its debut on
Allo, it will arrive on a smart speaker called Google Home this fall. Likewise,
Google Assistant won't automatically offer traffic conditions or transit
schedules for your regular commute the way Google Now does. You can request daily
updates on the weather, news and sports. Its Google Assistant will butt in with
restaurant recommendations when someone types, "Want to get sushi " It can also
send daily updates on weather and sports or suggest replies to your friends'
messages. If a friend asks how you're doing, you can tap "Good tnx. Everyone in
the chat will see the Assistant's replies and can weigh in on the choices. One
problem with both of these apps is that your friends need to be using the same
app to see the desired effect.
Apple Messages will add notations such as "sent

packs are also available through a new app store within Messages. Asking for
directions will bring up Google Maps. Beyond planning, Google Assistant can give
you the latest news and sports scores, translate phrases or do math
calculations. Google will send text messages to non-Allo friends, but without
the special effects. Google Assistant can retrieve information on nearby
restaurants, movie times and even the weather.Google wants to add a middleman to

boring, so Allo features a slider that can make your messages and emojis larger
or smaller.
You can send one of hundreds of virtual stickers specifically
designed for Allo.Google is releasing the free chat app Wednesday, just a week
after Apple updated its own Messages app with the iOS 10 software update. For
instance, if a friend asks you when your flight leaves, Allo won't try to
suggest a reply, even though Google has your calendar.Do you really need another
chat app Here's more on Allo to help you decide. The idea is to keep the
conversation flowing, so you don't have to constantly leave Allo to look up
something else. Google calls its Assistant a preview. After choosing one, you
can tap for opening hours, directions or the menu. Remember that this is
software, so its suggestions won't always make sense. But you can't get
automatic updates whenever the score changes or a game ends. Messages works on
iPhones and iPads, while Allo will work for iPhones and Android phones, but not
tablets." Allo preserves chatting shortcuts such as

The new Allo
app promises to be "smart," sort of. Allo will also analyze photos to suggest
replies such as "beautiful smile" or "the skyline looks great!" — at least for
photos with smiles or skylines.jpg Google wants to add a middleman to your
mobile chats -- a personal virtual assistant who's not shy about interjecting
itself into the conversation.Smart repliesAllo can help cut down on typing on
small screens by suggesting replies based on context. You can make a message
"loud," such that the chat bubble briefly gets larger. Or make it "gentle†and
appear in small text.In some cases, Google Assistant will even anticipate your
needs, such as when someone's asking about getting sushi. aLLO1. Though Google
Assistant is an evolution of the Google Now feature that has long been on
phones, it doesn't do as much as Google Now in terms of identifying patterns or
checking other Google services.Limited smarts The app's intelligence still
feels, well, limited. An oval bubble appears with an offer to retrieve nearby

If you can predict the weather
With the machine-based learning we can do it very quickly.Official interest has
also been boosted by China’s preparations to host the Winter Olympics —
Beijing’s

Manufacturers smog is worse in the colder months — in 2022. "More and more
people care about this information technology."There is increasing attention to
the air quality forecast service,†said Yu Zheng, a researcher at
Microsoft.
Bouts of acrid smog enveloping Beijing prompted authorities in the
Chinese capital to declare two unprecedented "red alerts†this month - a warning
to the city’s 22 million inhabitants that heavy pollution is expected for more
than three days. Both Microsoft and IBM secured their first government clients
last year after developing their respective pollution forecasting technologies
at their China-based research labs. For its part, Microsoft has signed up
China’s environment ministry, and the environmental protection bureaus in Fujian
province and Chengdu, the capital of the southwestern province of Sichuan..
"Most of the time pollutant emissions don’t vary very rapidly. Already more than
30 solar farms in China are using IBM’s forecasting technology, which can also
help predict the availability of sunlight.com, a free website and smartphone
app, in 2013 to predict clean air days using publicly available weather data on
wind patterns.
Two of the world’s largest technology firms, IBM and Microsoft,
are vying to tap the nascent, fast-growing market for forecasting air quality in
the world’s top carbon emitters. But there are still kinks to work out. The
latest version of Microsoft’s iPhone app lacked the forecasting function
advertised, which the company blamed on a soon-to-be-fixed bug, while during a
recent "red alert,†when the air was considered hazardous and schools were shut,
the China Open IBM-based forecast recommended "light exerciseâ€.Microsoft has
created a website called Urban Air and a smartphone app with a 48-hour forecast
for cities across China, while the China Open tennis tournament put two-day IBM
pollution forecasts for parks across Beijing on its public WeChat social
messaging account.5 — airborne particulate matter under 2.
Women wear face masks
on a heavily polluted day in Beijing.Outside China, IBM has also signed deals
for air quality modelling with Delhi, one of the world’s most polluted cities,
and Johannesburg.5 microns in diameter that can penetrate deep into the lungs —
in 2012, after denouncing the US embassy for publishing its own real-time
monitoring data on Twitter. The company launched a "Joint Environmental
Innovation Centre†— staffed by government and IBM scientists — with the bureau
earlier in December, allowing officials to better model pollution reduction
scenarios during the worst episodes.IBM’s first client was the city of Beijing’s
environmental protection bureau, which bases its colour-coded pollution alerts
on the technology.Still the municipal government only makes public a 24-hour
forecast on its website, meaning residents aren’t able to see for themselves
when a "red alert†may be due. — AFP Two of the world’s largest technology
firms, IBM and Microsoft, are vying to tap the nascent, fast-growing market for
forecasting air quality in the world’s top carbon emitters.â€A rudimentary
forecast was pioneered by Dustin Grzesik, a US geochemist and former Beijing
resident who created Banshirne.
If you can predict the weather, it only takes a
few more variables to predict air quality,†said Robert Rohde of Berkeley Earth,
a US-based non-profit that maps China’s real-time air pollution.â€The two tech
rivals aren’t just competing over government clients. Chinese authorities only
began releasing real-time levels of PM2.â€Now, advances in "cognitive computingâ€
— machines programmed to improve modeling on their own — allow more
sophisticated forecasting software to provide predictions for the air quality
index up to 10 days in advance using data on weather, traffic and land use, as
well as real-time pollution levels from government monitoring stations and even
social media posts."We should be able to use the same base system and do air
quality forecasting in different parts of the world,†said Brad Gammons, the
business leader behind the IBM initiative, which the company calls ‘Green
Horizons’.
And while other tech giants, such as China’s Alibaba, currently remain
on the sidelines, Air Visual, a crowd-sourced start-up pollution monitoring
platform based in Beijing, is already giving IBM and Microsoft a run for their
money, using "deep machine learning†to provide its own free three-day forecasts
for cities across the globe through its website and smartphone app.IBM has also
signed a deal with Zhangjiakou, which will jointly host the 2022 Winter Olympics
alongside Beijing, to do forward planning and scenario modeling ahead of the
games. Business clients - in particular renewable power generation companies —
are another target, along with consumers.Forecasts can help governments plan
when to close schools and airports, restrict vehicles or postpone sporting
events, and also decide which polluting factories to shut down temporarily.Such
alerts rely on advances in pollution forecasting, increasingly important for
Communist Party leaders as they seek improvements in monitoring and managing the
country’s notorious smog in response to growing public awareness. The
environmental bureau’s monitoring center did not respond to a request for

No numbers were exchanged
I could not believe that I had interacted with so many people and, having zero
time to assess their flaws in the middle of this maddening dance, was going with
the flow and having fun.Regardless of who they were, or where they came from,
everyone seemed to like that there were no torturous lessons, no fear of
failure, and zero judgments.A lot of them, like me, had taken heed to the
description on the Facebook page that said you could come alone and you could be
a total beginner. Over the course of the evening, a room full of strangers was
slowly transforming into a room full of friendly faces. Some came here for the
dance, but a whole lot were looking for a fun diversion. Then someone turned up
the tempo of the jazz. I eagerly waited for someone to ask me for a dance, and
sometimes I made eyes till they did. For the rest, it was a fun night.com.The
instruction part of the night was soon over, and everybody was asked to take
turns dancing with various people in the room.
This was when it became really
fun. It was total anarchy! My legs hurt from dancing, my jaw ached from smiling,
and I was sweating from head to toe, I did not want to stop dancing. I was flung
around, spun, and awkwardly moved from one step to another.By then I had figured
why this event was so popular and why it had drawn so many people every Sunday
night for over a year. Sure, we’re not averse to meeting strangers today, but in
the digital age, it feels more normal for us to swipe our way through the
process. Alone, with two left feet and a perfect wallflower attitude, I walked
into a Lindy Hop Social curious to find out what a ’20s American dance form was
doing in South Mumbai. The instructor led us, tap, tap, tapping
electric faucet Manufacturers our way through
two hours of a beginners’ class. The awkwardness of standing next to strangers
was slowly fading. My sense of regret grew when a man in a beret walked into the
centre of the room and asked people to choose random partners of the opposite
sex.As the clock drew closer to midnight, the crowds started thinning.Lindy Hop
is easy to learn, and you can be spontaneous with a lot of the movements – as
long as you get the basics right, of course. So I didn’t imagine I would see a
lot of people at a Lindy Hop Social on a Sunday evening.
No numbers were
exchanged, and there was only one Facebook friend request. Sometimes I just
stood and watched while my partner, a better dancer, did fancy moves that I
could barely imitate. Some had even made an effort to dress up a little bit,
keeping with the jazz theme. There was slow jazz playing as we giggled and tried
to keep up. I was surprised – the little room above a club was filled with
mostly young people, all shuffling in corners. Just like me. Some stepped on my
feet; I bumped into a lot more. But the room got warmer and the smiles a little
friendlier as we danced along.
Then someone turned up the tempo of the jazz. A
lot of people come by themselves and leave having made friends. There was small
talk while I nervously tried to avoid stepping on my partner’s legs. He says
that in a city so huge, it can be tough to find groups to socialise with. Wonder
if I’ll sign up for the dance classes now!By arrangement with thecitystory. I
realised that, deep down, I hadn’t come here because of any love for dance.A
social seems like an idea from a bygone time. Lindy Hop is easy to learn, and
you can be spontaneous with a lot of the movements – as long as you get the
basics right, of course. It’s a party without the need for mingling, very little
need for awkward small talk or knowing anyone. In a culture where it’s not easy
to make friends of the opposite sex by just going out, these events gave people
that avenue and an alternate form of socialising. It was more curiosity – would
people have fun alone at a dance party in this city? I had patted myself on the
back for having made the brave move to come by myself, but now I was going to
have to dance, matching steps with a person who I’d met merely seconds ago. One
or two even snuck in a salsa or jive move. I certainly didn’t feel like a dance
professional, but I was sweaty and content. I hadn’t even touched my phone for
four hours now.
There was a general nervousness running through the room as
people scanned each other as if there was a collective realisation among the
newbies that maybe a dance form from the ’20s did not a fun party make. Some
told me not to hop (it’s called Lindy Hop, man, what else will I do!), some
wouldn’t let me stop dancing. A social is a perfect setting where the steps are
easy and the dance uninhabited. A few people came by and waved goodbye with a
smile. The awkwardness of standing next to strangers was slowly fading.
Chaitanya Senapathi, instructor, organiser, and administrator at these socials,
agrees
